For more than thirty years, one question has driven everything I do: What does it actually look like to give seniors the care they deserve?
My name is Carla Amthor — a CPA by training, a caregiver by calling, and the owner of Focus on Caring since 2001. I've spent my career in Calgary believing that the obvious answer is rarely the best one, and that every family — no matter how complicated their situation — deserves someone in their corner who will ask, "If we could make this work, what would that look like?"
I call that the Power of Possibility. It's what built this company, and it's what drives every care plan, every caregiver match, and every conversation we have with families navigating one of the hardest seasons of life.
This blog is where we share what we've learned — about dementia care, about family caregiving, about what it means to age with dignity at home. Whether you're in the thick of a care crisis or just starting to ask questions, I hope you find something here that helps.
Welcome to the Chronicles. I'm glad you're here.

At Focus on Caring, we believe it’s time to rewrite the story of home care. For too many seniors and their families, the topic feels like another box to check—an unavoidable “to-do” as we age, right up there with updating a will or choosing a retirement plan. But what if we’ve been asking the wrong questions all along? What if home care isn’t about decline or necessity at all?
What if home care isn’t about decline or necessity at all? We’ve always delivered exceptional medical and personal care support—because that foundation matters deeply.
But we’ve never stopped there. We see home care through a much brighter, more expansive lens: as a personalized lifestyle partnership that adapts to who you are, what you love, and how you want to live. Zoom out, and you’ll see something far more inspiring: a life where you remain in control, connected, and free to enjoy every day on your own terms. Home care becomes the quiet support that lets you keep doing what you love—whether that’s spending time with grandchildren, pursuing hobbies, traveling, or simply savouring peaceful mornings in your own kitchen. At Focus on Caring, we are not a one-size-fits-all service. We are a team of compassionate, highly skilled professionals who specialize in crafting care plans as unique as the people we serve. When we talk about the “gold standard,” most people immediately think of currency or Olympic excellence. In senior care, I see it differently. To me, the gold standard is the unwavering commitment to protecting our most precious asset—our families—and giving them the dignity, comfort, and joy they deserve in the place they love most: their own home.I believe in family with every fiber of my being. My life has always been powered by deep connections with friends and loved ones, and I’ve built Focus on Caring on that same foundation. Families are not just important—they are sacred. They deserve to live the life they love, surrounded by familiar walls, cherished memories, and the care and attention that honors who they are. That, to me, is the greatest gift we can give. The wants and needs of today’s seniors have evolved dramatically. They are more active, engaged, and independent than any previous generation. Whether it’s staying connected through social media, attending grandchildren’s events, traveling as snowbirds, or participating in community life, seniors today expect to keep living the lifestyle they’ve built. The old assumption that “a facility is inevitable” no longer fits. Families now want—and truly deserve—solutions that let their loved ones remain at home, where life feels right.Aging brings changes that go far beyond the physical. Yes, mobility and cognition matter, but so do the quieter struggles: loneliness, isolation, emotional trauma, and the loss of confidence that often goes unspoken. Seniors may feel fearful or uncertain yet hesitate to share those feelings, not wanting to burden their children. Unfortunately, these emotional burdens feed into further decline, creating a painful cycle. At Focus on Caring, we have always refused to look the other way. From day one, we’ve recognized that truly excellent care must address the whole person—body, mind, and heart. We meet every client where they are, learning what brings them joy, comfort, and a sense of purpose. We weave those personal touches into every care plan. Even in the most advanced stages of dementia, we reach the person inside. We know that what you see on the surface doesn’t always reflect the vibrant emotional world still beating within. Our caregivers are trained to respond with gentleness, patience, and love—because every senior, no matter their condition, deserves to be treated with the tenderness they once showed others. For me, the gold standard is simple: it is the best, most reliable, and most prestigious level of care possible. While I may not be able to serve every family personally, I am determined to set the bar so high that it becomes the new expectation for senior care everywhere. Our clients and their families consistently tell us we’ve done exactly that.“They were daring in ways I could not possibly try to explain with mere words. Our family will always be grateful to them.”That is the standard we chase every single day at Focus on Caring.

A friend once said, “Aging is not for the faint of heart,” and anyone who has walked this path knows exactly how true that feels. Yet what many people don’t talk about is how rich and full this stage of life can actually be—if we give ourselves permission to imagine something different. Too often we’re told there’s only one road ahead: assisted living, long-term care, or a slow narrowing of choices. But why accept that as the default? Who decided that leaving your home, your memories, and your community is the only responsible option?I want to remain in my own home, surrounded by family, familiar routines, and the life I’ve built. I want the same for my parents. We all thrive in the places where we feel known—where our favorite chair still sits by the window, where neighbors wave as they walk by, and where the stories of a lifetime live in every room. Why give all of that up simply because a doctor says “it’s time”?With the right support, we don’t have to.Picture this: a dedicated team of caregivers who truly know you—not just your medical needs, but your personality, your sense of humor, and the way you like your morning coffee. People who make it possible to keep traveling, enjoy weekends away, host family dinners, or simply spend quiet afternoons doing the things that still light you up. That kind of freedom isn’t a fantasy. It’s a choice. The idea that we must limit our activities, stay put, or move into a facility is often just fear talking. What if those limiting beliefs were nothing more than a bad dream we could wake up from?At Focus on Caring, we’ve been helping families in Calgary and surrounding areas do exactly that for over 30 years. Our registered nurses and carefully matched caregivers don’t just provide care—they become part of your story. We take time to understand who you are, what matters most to you, and how we can support the life you still want to live. The result is care that feels seamless, respectful, and as comforting as family.Because aging in place isn’t about holding on—it’s about continuing to live fully, on your own terms. Welcome to The Focus on Caring Chronicles—a place where we share real stories, practical ideas, and gentle reminders that the best chapters of life can still be ahead.

Aging in place is the simple, powerful idea of living safely and independently in your own home and community as the years go by. It’s about planning ahead, spotting potential challenges early, and having the right support ready when you need it.But there’s an art to it, too.It starts with honoring a very personal decision: the choice to stay in the place you love—surrounded by familiar walls, cherished memories, and the community that knows you. That decision is the foundation. From there, the real question becomes: How do we make it possible?
At Focus on Caring, we call it building your toolbox.Think back to growing up on a farm (or maybe you did). “Town” wasn’t always close, so the freezer, pantry, and fridge were always well stocked. When you needed something—expected or not—it was right there. No scrambling, no settling, no making do. You were prepared because you had a plan. That’s exactly what we create for the families we serve.
Your Focus on Caring toolbox is custom-built for you. It’s filled with practical solutions, flexible support, and genuine peace of mind—both for today and for whatever tomorrow might bring. And the best part? You help design it.Maybe you want help with meal preparation so you can keep hosting family dinners.
Maybe light housekeeping, companionship, or someone to join you for appointments and social events.
Maybe you dream of traveling again, and all you need is a trusted lifestyle assistant to make it possible. Whatever your vision looks like, your toolbox is expandable. It grows with you. It adapts. It includes exceptionally skilled home care when needed—and the freedom to live fully in between. Our team members carry their own well-stocked toolbox, too—packed with expertise, compassion, and the ability to shift seamlessly from lifestyle support to more intensive care in a moment’s notice. We don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all.” We listen, we plan, and we match our skills to exactly what you need.Life has twists and turns. Having a toolbox ready isn’t just practical—it’s empowering. It’s the difference between merely coping and truly thriving in the home you love. For more than 29 years, Focus on Caring has been elevating aging in place to an entirely new level for families across Calgary and the surrounding areas. No request is too small or too big. We nurture, support, and deliver the kind of care seniors truly deserve—right where they belong. So… is your toolbox well stocked? If you’re ready to build the one that fits your life perfectly, we’d love to help you create it. Because aging in place isn’t about giving things up—it’s about having everything you need to keep living fully, on your own terms.Welcome to The Focus on Caring Chronicles. Focus On Caring has been a Godsend for us. When our mother was experiencing a health crisis, they responded right away. Their professional, kind and compassionate approach enabled us to provide mom with outstanding health care.
Just knowing that, on an ongoing basis, there was an experienced care provider with our mom provided us with a great deal of peace of mind, especially considering both my sister and I were outside of the province at the time. We also appreciated that they have a wide variety of care options that we could draw upon.
Focus On Caring truly is a 'caring' organization that we'd highly recommend.
Focus On Caring has been a major contributor to our family’s well being since my aging parents initially required live-in care. They have consistently supplied superior caregivers who are dedicated to their clients in every way. When the caregiving demands increase or the health situation changes, we can count on Focus On Caring to contact medical experts and find skilled help. Focus On Caring ensures that their caregivers are a good fit with the client and responds quickly to any client or staff concerns. People who have seen the Focus On Caring staff with my parents always remark on the excellent and compassionate care they provide.
I have never been disappointed and recommend Focus On Caring to anyone who needs professional, competent and sincerely heartfelt care!

Home care is a conversation most seniors and their families eventually have. It’s part of “getting things in order” — planning for what might come as we age. But what if we’ve been having the wrong conversation all along?Too often, home care gets boxed into the narrow world of medical needs and personal assistance. The moment the topic comes up, many of us instinctively pull back. We resist. We think, “That’s not for me yet,” or “I don’t want to be a burden.” What if that limited view is actually keeping us from the very support that could make this chapter of life richer, freer, and far more enjoyable? At Focus on Caring, we believe it’s time for a different conversation. For over 30 years, we’ve provided exceptional home care across Calgary and surrounding areas.
